Why Keep a Sketchbook?

Keeping a Sketchbook-Journal, also known as a Visual Journal has many benefits and is fun!

Sketchbook-Journaling incorporates many approaches and media including but not limited to: pencil, pen, marker, watercolor, ink, colored pencil, collage, even stamps, and stencils!

Keeping a Visual Journal helps create a sense of living in the moment, focusing on that which fascinates you and brings you joy. Learning to slow down and observe your world allows you to be present to the moment and cultivate gratitude for the small wonders we encounter each day.

A Sketchbook-Journal gives you a safe, inviting place to nurture and develop your creativity, to explore and experience both the world and the making of images, which, when paired with journaling (writing) add another layer to the celebration and recording of your life.

Engaging with the world through drawing and writing, at whatever skill level you possess from absolute novice to seasoned artist, becomes an enriching way of living life and provides a wonderful way to experience and reflect on all that life has to offer, and to record the experiences you have from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Sketchbook-Journals can help develop creative skills or simply be a place for creative expression or both. Writing can be factual or poetic or both, your Visual Journal can be themed, (travel, food, people, gardens), or simply a running account of your day to day experiences. Sketchbook-Journaling is personal, rewarding and accessible to everyone and a satisfying way to weave creativity into your daily life.

Jan Blencowe

Welcome!

Keeping a sketchbook journal has become an incredibly fulfilling, and happy experience for me. The joy of creating, the calm of being mindful and in the moment, the gratitude that develops from slowing down and looking closely at things, the connection and bond that I've forged with nature, celebrating the ordinary, finding the beautiful in the simple have all made me happy.

Here I'd like to share with you all the wonderful, enriching joys I've found by keeping a sketchbook. From the glorious colors of paint, to the smooth feel of new paper, to the the humble pen, far mightier than the sword.

Come create with me, learn, play, experiment, and be happy!
